My personal go to genres of music may be all things metal or rock, but if I had to have a guilty pleasure in music it would be pop. I also don’t believe in guilty pleasures when it comes to music. Listen to what brings you joy loudly and proudly. There’s something medicinal when it comes to pop music. Be it the overly saccharine lyrics, the clean vocals, or just a simple beat, pop music is a great palate cleanser.
The latest single “Don’t Know About the World” by Emei check off all that I like about pop music.
Sweet lyrics, clean vocals, simple beats.
She proves one doesn’t need layers upon layers of vocals or instruments to have a song that is sticky and listening to “Don’t Know About the World” is like getting caught in a spider web. The more one may struggle against it, the more one is going to fall in love with the song.
Emei says this about “Don’t Know About the World”,
A song about feeling safe and finding solace in that one person (or space or thing). I don’t often write about love, so finding a way to create a sappy authentic love song that still could live on this project was more difficult than you’d think. I wanted this single to be a bit of a left turn from my previous singles. I wanted the song to be a window into my emotional world.
No stranger to feeling safe on a stage or in front of a crowd, Emei has competed on Chinese Idol, toured through months of stadium shows, competed on Dancing with the Stars of China, and is preparing for her first headline tour this fall. So while “Don’t Know About the World” was written about feeling safe with a person, it would also be safe to say that Emei’s words could have been an ode to her love of performing as well.
