Clarence James and his latest single “Flake” sits on the thin cross hairs of being a jazz infused hip hop indie rock song that is Clarence’s own confessional of his introverted and self destructive behaviours.
He says of the song,
“I feel like the sentiment of the song is a popular one among my fellow neurotics. I’ve been struggling to navigate the mental systems that are keeping me from staying in touch with my loved ones. Personally and societally, strong community units are somewhat of a commodity. I personally tend to dwell on it and form bad habits centered around anxiety. These habits far too often lead to self destruction, and it’s important to understand the positive significance of relying on people.”
From his forthcoming album WHY WOULD I MAKE PEACE WITH THIS DEMON? the song is but a mere glimpse into the inner workings of not only Clarence’s mind but his creativity and craftsmanship.
There’s superb authenticity that echoes in “Flake” that I, also an introvert with self destructive behaviours, connect with. It’s as if Clarence has peered into the minds of many and said you are not alone. His genuineness in a day and age of filters and cultivated timelines is refreshing and relieving.
And while “Flake” resonates on a lyrical level, what stands out about the song is the way Clarence delivers the track and the music. His Texas roots echo through twangy guitars and beats and instead of clashing with his voice and other instruments, they wonderfully meld together into a sound that not only is soothing but also showcases the inner highs and lows of a mind in conflict.
