Cardiff punk rockers, SYBS have released their first single “Gwacter” (“Emptiness”) from their forthcoming debut album (Libertino Records).
Singer and songwriter, Osian explains the writing process the song,
“‘Gwacter’ was written while I was living in London and had to travel back and forth a lot of the time to Cardiff. The words are definitely inspired by the experience of seeing a number of familiar venues in Cardiff closing down and being demolished, and then going back to London which seemed to be changing and morphing all the time at an incredibly fast rate. This obviously worried me at the time, and unfortunately, the situation hasn’t changed much by today.”
Osian further adds,
“As for the music, I remember writing it very late at night after watching the film ‘Lost in Translation’ for the first time. I believe this had a big impact on the atmosphere of the song, which marks the start to the darker second half of the album.”
While the song may start the darker half of the upcoming album, “Gwacter” is anything but.
“Gwacter” is bold and vibrant, exuding a sense of youthful exuberance and unwavering confidence despite being inspired by a sense of growth and demise. It brims with infectious energy and reverberates with a magnetic bass line that floats beneath the song’s surface, providing a foundation for the punchy guitars, pulsating rhythm, and vocals to float on.
Each note and beat in “Gwacter” feels purposeful and carries a sense of urgency that nods to the ever evolving dynamics of loss and rapid transformation via one helluva dynamic musical tapestry.
