The song’s foundation came together almost effortlessly. With Kristen explaining,
The guitar riffs and melody came while Nolan and I were setting up for band practice, just waiting for Waz and Dave. By the time they got there, we had the main structure of a fun little pop-punk tune. From there it became more of a Pixies-meets-pop-punk track, but it honestly hasn’t changed much since that first day. It’s probably our most upbeat, happiest sounding tune to date.
With the bare bones of the track in place before the rest of the band arrived, it’s proof that sometimes the best songs come from pure instinct rather than overthinking.
On the song, Kirsten says,
‘How Did We Get Here’ is a song about second chances vs. leaving the past behind. When you reach a point that you can try again or keep moving on and making progress… in this case, the decision is to keep going forward.
There’s a wonderful grit to “How Did We Get Here” that makes it feel like it was ripped right out of the grunge era but also a bounce around a Warped Tour pit vibe that gives the song a pop punk vibe.
On the music, Nolan says,
I love distortion, I love a quick tempo and anything more than four chords is just too complicated. Kris gave it a really great hook and a big chorus… the guys came in and gave it a pulse…and voila!
The straightforward approach pays off, keeping the track punchy and full of momentum as the lyrics explore the aforementioned tension between second chances and moving forward. It’s a theme that pairs perfectly with the song’s relentless energy and captures the push-and-pull of change without losing its sense of fun.
