LISTEN: “Ignis Fatuus” by Root Zero

The latest from Root Zero makes one thing clear. They are not just another progressive metal band flexing their technical chops. They’re storytellers and “Ignis Fatuus”  is a full-throttle chapter. Tapping into gothic textures and dynamic shifts, the Welsh six-piece balances chaos with clarity by pulling you into a sound that’s as dense as it is deliberate.

Sasha Bannister’s lead vocals soar and snarl with purpose, backed by the steady tension of Giacomo Fiderio’s synths and co-lead howls. The guitars from Llyr Williams and Wren Wood don’t just shred, they shape the terrain by twisting through heavy grooves and melancholic swells that suggest Cult of Luna by way of Deftones. Rob Edwards (bass) and Joshua Powell-Gibbs (drums) anchor it all with a low-end throb that hits like a heartbeat under siege.

Despite its complexity, “Ignis Fatuus” never spirals into excess. Every shift feels intentional, every layer earned. The band doesn’t just stack parts. They build the atmosphere from the inside out. Root Zero’s ability to marry power with patience sets them apart from genre peers and makes this track a standout preview of what Dark Rainbow (May 16) promises to deliver.
