Defence mechanisms come in all shapes and sizes. Be it humour, distance, or anger, humans have an internal weapon to keep hurt or fear at bay.
But what happens when there is a major malfunction of one’s defence mechanism?
That’s what Pigeon Club is exploring in their latest single, “Liar” from their upcoming second album, Another Year in the Minors. From the mastermind of Wayne Whittaker, the all around musically adept human, recalls this on writing the song,
“This was a really hard song to write. Structurally, it came together very quickly. But once I read it back, it became clear that this was going to be a particularly exposing three minutes. Thankfully, the touched upon themes are unmistakably human, so at the very least I’ve confirmed that I am indeed only human.”
Human indeed and one that is full of honesty and transparency, and like the human that wrote “Liar”, the song is an ever present reminder of how some struggle to engage or maintain the facade of their authenticity when anxiety rears its often ugly and disparaging head.
A tough subject to tackle but “Liar” does so with gentleness and kindness. Lyrically acknowledging the anxiety and self doubt with words that are sympathetic and understanding and with music that is soothing, calming, and reassuring. The one two punch combination gives “Liar” a universal nod, empathising with those that struggle with anxiety and more.
