Meet George Alfie. Or I should say, listen to George Alfie and his latest single “Meant to Be (With Me)”.
With big plans for 2024 on the horizon, “Meant to Be (With Me)” is one of the first singles that the UK artist will be releasing this year and one could say, George Alfie has always had big plans for his life. He left school at the tender age of 9 and used music and performance as a way of creating a bond with others. Whether he’s playing an acoustic show or a festival stage, George ensures he’s creating a space for people to be seen and heard no matter the size of the crowd and he does not only through his music but his genuine connection to his fans and by working with his bandmates to create a frequency and vibe on stage that electrifies and moves.
On “Meant to Be (With Me)”, George says,
“I wrote this song about falling in love with someone who I couldn’t be with. I feel I can be seen as resentful in the song but towards the end of the song, as I’m singing, it’s more of a cry for what could’ve been. The thought of ‘what could have been’ is one of the hardest heartbreaks of all. You’ve designed these hopes and dreams in your head with this person, and now you need to detach from them, and step back into a reality without them, when the comfort of them in your mind is a nicer place to be.”
In the simplicity of the beats in “Meant to Be (With Me)” there is a refined energy that hovers just underneath the melody. It rides the seduction of the bass and the sharp attack of the guitars and gives George’s vocals a strength and power. And while I find no resentment in George’s voice, what I do find is a confident swagger that knows what it wants, but also knows that boundaries are required to remain in space that allows one to love.
The fearless expression of raw emotions, coupled with the acceptance of non-reciprocity, makes “Meant to Be (With Me)” a guttural and visceral journey.
