A brief serendipitous moment with a man in an octopus hat was all it took for Emily Wurramara to pour her heart and soul into the song “Midnight Blues”.
In the confessional song, Emily’s heartfelt vulnerability is supported by the blues. Blues guitar that is. They echo her ache, her pain, and her sadness.
On the song, Emily shares,
“It’s precious to show people why this life is beautiful and worth sticking around for; being vulnerable in itself has so much strength & staunchness. I want to help people to release, cry, and let it out – this is normal because we live in a fucked up society, of course we feel shit – I want ‘Midnight Blues’ to be a safe space to feel.”
On the song being dedicated to her mother’s love, she adds,
“If it wouldn’t be for my mum being there every step of the way I don’t think I’d be here to be honest.”
With “Midnight Blues,” Emily fearlessly confronts the sadness of her inner demons that were triggered by postpartum depression, alcohol, and attempts on her own life. And while “Midnight Blues” could have been a ‘whoa-is-me’ song, Emily beautifully transforms her pain into strength and in doing so, allows space for others to do the same.
“Midnight Blues” is the clock striking on a new found strength that can only be found by staring at what haunts one the most.
