I really wanted to open this article with a line from Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” but it felt too cliched and too easy. Meet young gun Alex Spencer who will no doubt be spending his summer playing live shows instead of being a fan in the crowd.
On his latest song, “One Way Ticket”, Alex says,
I talk about the life of someone essentially of a generation stuck in the same loop, in a system that repeats over and over again. According to those higher up, our lives are set out exactly how they want them to be. We might be beginning to realise we have less freedom, but not everybody can see it yet. So many problems in this world are man-made but we can break free and fix them.
Within the two plus minute track, Alex quickly establishes himself as a master of words and music. There’s a hint of Oasis with Alex’s vocals in “One Way Ticket” that’s enamouring and his vocals betray his age, sounding wise like a weathered rock star versus a young artist. He has swagger and confidence and his introspective lyrics capture the essence of his generation and perhaps all generations regardless of age.
“One Way Ticket” is more than a mere anthem for the fighting against the system, it’s also a voice from a generation that says enough is enough, it’s time for change.
