Toronto’s socially conscious and misfit band, The Blues Emergency is once again channelling their blues-rock energy into their latest single, “Quicksand”.
With music being a catalyst for change, The Blues Emergency aims to create a better awareness of addiction, mental health, and homelessness.
On the song, the band says,
“‘Quicksand’ explores the devastating effects of heavy drug addiction, mental health, and homelessness that increasingly plagues our society. The title is used as a metaphor for someone struggling with these issues as they sink deeper into an abyss of darkness with a feeling of no way out. The song is a call to action for people to come together and make a real difference in the lives of those struggling with these issues by giving them a day-in-the-life view. It’s easy to judge another person when you don’t have knowledge of their past.”
Layered with gripping riffs by Emir Halilovic on guitar and John Anthony Brand on bass, the gritty vocals of Andy du Regoand, and powerful drums of Marshall Baglieri, “Quicksand” is a haunting song that explores the relentless echoes of childhood trauma on the human spirit.
While some lyrics create a sense of perfection, the lyrics of “Quicksand” are brutally honest and show an underbelly of life. One that is not a white picket fence and loving family, but that of life’s cruel and harsh reality that some sadly have experienced. The lyrics are brutally honest and are the key component that makes “Quicksand” so powerful.
Without the lyrics, “Quicksand” is a good rock song.
With the lyrics, “Quicksand” is a great rock song.
Hard-hitting and entwined with brutally honest lyrics, “Quicksand” is an unforgiving look at the harsh realities of addiction, mental health, and destitution.
