I always get nervous when I see the word rose in a song title. I immediately think of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison or “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal, both of which are quiet and emotional ballads.
That perception has changed with the latest single, “Roses in Ruins” by Modern Mimes. Arianie Elcida Hernandez (vocals), Ernesto Paez, (guitar, bass, synth, vocals), and Justin Perez (who left the band at the beginning of January) shifts the rose from its heartbreak era and into its villain era with their melodic and infectious track.
The heavy rhythms in “Roses in Ruins” introduce a metal element, yet it’s Arianie’s strong vocals that anchor the song firmly into a hard rock sound. The song shows off Modern Mimes’ technical harmonies, vocal melodies, and stirring lyricism.
