LISTEN: “The Parting Glass” by Forgotten Shrine

Music
Shelia Taylor
August 10, 2024

Forgotten Shrine has reimagined the Scottish classic, “The Parting Glass” with folk metal flair. A staple at celebrations and farewells, the song struck a chord with Josh Alexander when he heard it on the soundtrack of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, while Exiled Hope’s Sofia Frasz recalled her first encounter with the song was in Waking Ned Devine.

The duo take a bold step by transforming the Scottish folk standard into an entrancing folk metal rendition. The reimagining breathes new life into a timeless melody and features guest flautist Ember Belladonna who has elevated the track to new heights by adding an enchanting layer to the arrangement.

Forgotten Shrine strikes a balance between the song’s inherent emotional heart and the energetic intensity of metal. The result is a version of “The Parting Glass” that retains its wistful charm while embracing the robust, dynamic textures of folk metal.
