LISTEN: “Transparency” by Mutes

Mutes, Birmingham’s post-punk trio are back with a mesmerizing new single titled “Transparency”. As a precursor to their highly anticipated fourth studio album, …buried where you stand, set to debut on May 17th, the song was recorded live at Megatone Studios under the guidance of Mark Gittins and offers one a captivating journey into the band’s sonic universe, blending elements of krautrock with surrealistic lyricism that delves into the transient nature of human existence.

“Transparency” is a potent reminder of the inevitability of mortality, exploring themes of mortality and the human condition with haunting intensity.

James, vocalist and guitarist of Mutes, reflects on the genesis of the track,

“‘Transparency’ was one of the last songs written for the record, but it was immediately apparent that it would become the opening track – it has a sense of purpose that encapsulates our work ethic. Lyrically it handles Western civilisation’s persistent avoidance of acknowledging the inevitability of death – that the most we can hope for is that the fatal decline is as drawn-out as possible (interspersed with dream-diary recollections of burnt human remains strewn down an infinite highway – pretty jovial stuff).”

With its pulsating rhythms and intoxicating melodies, “Transparency” invites one to confront their own mortality and is a reflection on the fragility of the human form. Lyrically, the song navigates through dream-like landscapes and existential musings, juxtaposing introspective introspection with surreal imagery evocative of a post-apocalyptic world. It leaves  a lasting impression, urging one to ponder the mysteries of existence in the face of inevitable mortality.
