LISTEN: “Ugly” by Oswald Slain

Oswald Slain makes a thunderous return with their new single, “Ugly”, from their forthcoming debut EP, Kiss Me on the Mouth (April 2025). Their follow up to debut single, “Happiness is Overrated”, channels classic rock’s raw and unfiltered energy but has a brash and electrifying modern bite.

Produced in the band’s DIY home studio and mastered by Jason Mitchell (PJ Harvey, XTC, Big Special), “Ugly” is thick with fuzzy guitar tones and a rhythm that oozes swagger and attitude. The relentless drum beat keeps the momentum, while the band balances grit with unexpected moments of melody with ease. It’s a sound that feels rough around the edges yet meticulously crafted.

Frontman Charlie Fitzgerald drew inspiration from the excess and chaos of the 1970s adult entertainment industry as a backdrop for a larger reflection on imperfection and beauty. He explains,

We really enjoyed the slapping drum beat and fuzzy guitars and wanted to make something gross and tacky with some pretty moments.

The songwriting, equal parts sincere and sardonic, adds yet another layer to the track’s punch. Having built a strong reputation under their previous name, Little Thief, the band steps into a new era with “Ugly”. It’s a smart mix of reckless energy and sharp musicianship that proves their ability to evolve while staying true to their rock roots.
