The old adage is “hindsight is twenty twenty,” and in her latest single Avery Cochrane channels the sometimes quiet sting of said hindsight into an upbeat pop song. While “Griever” follows the reactive rage and hurt of a past broken heart after a chance run in, it’s Avery’s voice that solidifies said rage and hurt.
While she’s not screaming it, there’s an undertone of fury in Avery’s vocal delivery. It’s fast and sometimes furious, but it is controlled and calculated. She lets each line stew just as her own frustrations reach a boiling point. Underneath it all are punchy beats and infectious synths that betray the sense of resentment and anger with a brightness that often defines a snappy pop song.
And “Griever” is just that. A snappy pop song that captures the complexity of past feelings in a way that’s as catchy as it is considered.
