DEBUT SINGLE: “Wake the Dead” by Mighty One

Music
Shelia Taylor
November 17, 2023

In 2020, Emma Kingston and Mark Stidson joined forces to become one…the Mighty One to be exact. With their love of 90’s guitar, electronics, soundscapes and heartfelt vocals, the duo have released a handful of live songs but now they have released their debut single “Wake the Dead” to all streaming platforms.

On the song, the band says,

“‘Wake The Dead’ centres itself around the notions of regret, and all of the emotions that come with it. Sharon Van Etten meets The National, it’s a bittersweet yet uplifting anthem.”

With comparisons to that of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Nationals, and Phoebe Bridgers, the duo partnered with Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey, Placebo, Torres) to co-produce the single and with Dom Monk engineering, TJ Allen mixing, and Guy Davie mastering.

“Wake the Dead” ensnares from the first note with emotional drums and bass riff, surging pianos, and wailing guitars, but it’s the stirring vocals and poignant lyrics that truly elevates the song to become an anthem on letting go of regret and finding solace in that first step forward.

With their debut single, “Wake the Dead”, Mighty One has struck a chord with their emotional resonance and heartfelt melodies.
