Heartbreak rarely sounds this inviting, but Young Martyrs turn loss into something melodic on their song, “Never Gave You The Blues”.
Vocalist Tom Corneill explains,
‘Never Gave You The Blues’ is about the breakdown of something beautiful, but he sees it one way and she sees it another. He says if he’d known it was going to hurt them both he would never have started it… but we know that’s not really true. It’s a classic he said / she said story; Not everyone can be telling the truth.
The candid framing gives the song its tension by capturing the way memory and regret rarely align. What makes the single stand out is how effortlessly it translates an intimate story into a live favorite.
Tom notes,
When we finished our first UK tour of sellout shows, this was the song everyone shouted for the most.
That audience pull explains why the band returned to it with a music video, despite having initially set it aside due to funding limits. Recorded at Real World Studios with producer Sebastian Brice and joined by Natalie Brice of Sinnober on guest vocals, the track thrives on its contrasts. Gentle rhythms keep it steady and guitar lines climb and shine while rich harmonies soften the weight of its theme.
