On the song, Kayla confesses,
“I’ve had a secret crush on my brother’s best friend ever since I was 14, and this song was created in my longing to have more than 5 minute fleeting conversations with him every time he would come over.”

While “Small Talk” exposes Kayla’s yearning for a deeper connection, it also connects anyone who has ever had a ‘secret crush’. There’s a poetic beauty to her lyrics. They’re less confessional and more stream of consciousness of being in a moment as if her crush was standing in front of her. Over looping beats and plucking guitar strings, this cleansing of emotions makes “Small Talk” a nostalgically sweet and tender pop song.
