Shadow of the Talisman’s music video for “What Is Real?” is a visual companion to their powerful new single from their forthcoming album As Above, So Below (February 21). Directed by the band’s vocalist Mike Smith, the video delivers an intense portrayal of inner turmoil and emotional isolation, brought to life through stunning imagery and a haunting performance by Brandon Stutzman as The Outlaw.
Set in a crumbling and desolate building, the video mirrors the song’s themes of struggle and disillusionment. The use of muted tones and shadow-filled cinematography creates a stark and atmospheric backdrop that amplifies the track’s heavy emotions. Brandon’s portrayal of The Outlaw, an embodiment of despair and resilience, anchors the narrative, guiding viewers through moments of vulnerability and introspection.
Despite its limited budget and tight production timeline, the band has crafted a polished and impactful visual experience. The combination of decaying aesthetics with a raw and heartfelt performance underscores the song’s core message.
Vocalist and director, Mike Smith adds explains,
“This song is about the negative thoughts that run through someone’s mind who is struggling to cope with life’s difficulties and trials. Eventually you either become numb or delusional to what is going on in your life. Our main character The Outlaw (who was portrayed by Brandon Stutzman) is meant to be your guide through these negative emotions. What makes this music video special to us is that it was written, produced, and edited by the members in the band. Everyone had a part to play to bring this production to life.”
With its thoughtful execution of the glimpse into the darker corners of the human psyche and the collaborative effort from the band, “What Is Real?” is an artistic statement that connects to its audience.
