ALBUM REVIEW: Sacred & Profane by Oryad

Out now, Sacred & Profane finds Oryad adding opera and jazz to their prog metal sound.

Oryad is fronted by Moira Murphy and her powerful operatic voice. Joining her is drummer Matt Gotlin-Sheehan and classically trained jazz musicians Luca and Adam.

Of the album, Oryad says,

In our society we have anesthetized so much of the human experience and partitioned off parts of ourselves, claiming that anger, for example, can only be ugly. That grief should be hidden. That it is socially acceptable to only revel in their brighter siblings love, joy, and hope…which only makes those three more cloying and homogenized.

The guitars are heavy, the drums are thunderous, the bass rumbles, and on top, riding the majestic waves are Moira’s vocals. She masterfully wields her instrument to blend effortlessly with the music. Through the mix of metal and opera, Sacred & Profane allows one to enjoy metal and opera in a new way. One can connect and experience feelings and emotions without hiding behind walls.
