There were a lot of fantastic songs in 2023, but these were the eleven songs that made us use an expletive when first listening.
In alphabetical order by artist:
“Master of the Universe” by Angus McSix from Angus McSix and the Sword of Power – good god what an epic fun tune. This song and this album put fantasy metal and power metal on our radar and we’ll be forever grateful.
“Ydi” by Arkona from Kob’ – Arkona introduced us to pagan metal. Masha’s vocals in this song are superb. The music, the mood, and everything about this song is fantastic.
“So Bad” by Baby Schillaci from Physical Only – holy shit were the first words we wrote about so bad. We still feel that way listening to now.
“Jungle Song” by Carbellion from Weapons of Choice – goddamn this song is a banger. It still lives rent free in our heads.
“Little Girl Gone” by Chinchilla – single – good God almighty, girl can sing.
“No Quitter” by Econoline Crush from When the Devil Drives – this song put Econoline Crush back in our lives and we are ever so grateful and thankful the band continues to create music.
“Run This Town” by Grand Am from Sweet Tooth – we didn’t write a review of Grand Am’s debut album Sweet Tooth and it’s our own fault but this song was the shining star on the album.
“Backseat Therapy” by Krooked Tongue from Deathproof – lyrically this song blew our minds. Sheer perfection.
“Baptize Me” by Saving Abel – single – the essence of what a rock song should be
“Holy Hells” by Spelles from Diving into the Arms of the Divine – holy hell was this song fantastic, soul stirring, and perfect
“Love is a Weapon” by The Terrifying Lows – single – written from the point of view of a gaslighter, this song is hauntingly beautiful
