ALBUM REVIEW: Gravity of Gold by Alas de Liona

Showcasing her ethereal vocals and personal songwriting, Alas de Liona‘s anticipated second album, Gravity of Gold, will enchant one with its rich blend of indie-pop and alt-rock.  Recorded at Post Electric Studios in Leith with producer Rod Jones of Idlewild fame, Gravity of Gold features eleven tracks that offer a spectrum of emotional landscapes.

The album moves away from the folk roots of Alas’s debut and embraces a more upbeat indie-pop vibe while retaining a thematic focus on the complexities of the human experience. The songs are designed to stand alone yet contribute to a cohesive narrative that reflect Alas’ growth as an artist.

The album opens with “19.3,” which beautifully explores love amid life’s challenges. The lead single, “Analogy,” takes one on a haunting journey through memory and self-deception. Following this is “Violet,” a breezy tune that cleverly juxtaposes an upbeat sound with deeper themes.

“Vine Song” dives into the dangers of idealising others, while “Promises” critiques the pressures of social media. The reflective “Driftwood” and ballad “The Miller” continue this thematic exploration and offer insight into the aftermath of relationships and coping mechanisms.

“Materia Medica” is contemplation of self-destructive patterns while “Summer Rain” is an ode to sleepless nights and the struggles of everyday life. The penultimate track, “The Question,” which grapples with existential themes while the final track “The Alchemist’s Son” is a thoughtful reflection on the cost of chasing dreams.

Gravity of Gold is a heartfelt exploration of navigating the mind and heart. Combined with her unique voice, insightful lyrics, and ability to weave catchy melodies with serious themes makes Gravity of Gold a magical journey worth taking.
