In our conversation, NOEL reflects on his latest EP Mementos, his artistic evolution, and reveals how each song serves as a personal snapshot, capturing his journey through pivotal life experiences. NOEL also credits his past in football for instilling a strong work ethic and acknowledges the role his viral TikTok success played in propelling his career forward.
ATN: Mementos dives into complex emotions like self-worth, ambition, and heartbreak. What inspired you to explore these themes so deeply on the EP?
NOEL: The EP really reflects where I was in life during the writing process. It’s a bit of a coming-of-agestory, capturing the struggles of navigating life and trying to find your place in the world. These themes came naturally because they were at the forefront of my mind—things I was wrestling with on a personal level. It’s almost like a snapshot of that time in my life, where every song became a piece of the puzzle.
ATN: You have mentioned that “Flowers at a Funeral” deals with a disconnect between heart and mind. Can you share more about the experience or moment that led to writing this song?
NOEL: I was dating someone for a long time who, on paper, seemed perfect for me. But no matter how much I wanted it to work, my heart wasn’t aligned with my mind. It was a tough realization to come to terms with because I wanted to feel something that just wasn’t there. Writing “Flowers at a Funeral” became a way for me to process those emotions and accept that even though it didn’t last, the relationship still held beauty and significance.
ATN: How did writing a song like “Heart Full of Ghosts,” which struggles with vulnerability, impact you personally and creatively?
NOEL: Sharing something so personal is always intimidating because it’s out there for everyone to hear and interpret. But at the same time, there’s something deeply therapeutic about that level of honesty. Writing “Heart Full of Ghosts” allowed me to confront my own feelings and put them into words. Creatively, it pushed me to lean into vulnerability as a strength rather than something to shy away from.
ATN: The EP features elements like 80s-inspired guitars and even banjo. How did you decide on these unique sounds to complement the emotional narrative of your lyrics?
NOEL: The sound of the EP evolved naturally as we followed the energy of each song. I’ve always been drawn to the warmth and storytelling quality of folk music, so incorporating elements like the banjo felt like a natural fit. At the same time, the 80s-inspired guitars brought a sense of nostalgia and depth. It all came down to finding the right textures to match the emotions in the lyrics.
ATN: In what ways do you feel Mementos shows your growth as a songwriter and artist since your debut EP Headed North?
NOEL: With Headed North, I was just finding my footing—it was a collection of some of the first songs I’d ever written. I’m proud of it, but it didn’t have a clear direction. Mementos feels much more intentional. I knew the sound I wanted to explore and felt more confident in my ability to convey my emotions and experiences. It’s a reflection of how much I’ve grown, not just as a songwriter, but as a person.
ATN: You’ve described “Nightmares” as having an unsettling, dream-like quality. How do you approach creating a sound that feels both haunting and beautiful?
NOEL: For me, it’s about letting the song lead the way. I don’t go in chasing a specific sound; I just let the emotions guide the production. With “Nightmares,” the haunting quality came through naturally as we leaned into the darker, dream-like aspects of the lyrics. It’s a balance of embracing the eerie and still finding moments of beauty within it.
ATN: You mentioned that “Without Calling” came together with stunning harmonies and a raw chorus. Was there a particular process or moment in the studio that made this song stand out for you?
NOEL: I wrote “Without Calling” during a writing camp in a cabin in Sweden with two songwriting friends. I’d been playing around with the melody at home for a while but couldn’t get it to click. In the cabin, everything fell into place. There wasn’t one standout moment—it was more about how everything came together so naturally. The harmonies and rawness of the chorus made it feel like something special from the start.
ATN: Coming from a background in football, how does your former athletic discipline influence your music-making process?
NOEL: I wouldn’t say that football directly influences my music-making, but the discipline and focus it instilled in me definitely carry over. Whether it’s dedicating time to songwriting or pushing through creative blocks, that same mindset helps me stay committed to my craft. Football and music are so different, but I think that’s why I love them both—they balance each other out.
ATN: Your career started with viral TikTok covers. How has your online presence shaped your approach to creating and sharing original music?
NOEL: My online presence hasn’t necessarily changed how I create music, but it’s been instrumental in giving me the opportunity to share it. Posting covers started as a way to show friends I’d taken up singing – it was never meant to go anywhere. But as things gained traction, it opened doors I hadn’t even considered. It’s been a surreal journey, and I’m grateful for how it all unfolded.
ATN: With the upcoming release, how do you envision translating these songs into a live setting, especially given the intricate production details?
NOEL: Since every song on the EP started with just a guitar, I’m confident they’ll translate well in different live settings. Whether it’s a full band on a big stage or a stripped-down acoustic set, the heart of the songs will still shine through. I think their simplicity at their core makes them adaptable.
ATN: You’ve mentioned that 2024 is just the beginning for you. What can fans expect next after Mementos, both in terms of music and live show?
NOEL: Fans can definitely expect a lot more music – I’m already working on new material, and I’m excited to share it. I’m also hoping 2024 will be the year I really dive into live shows. Performing live is something I’m eager to explore, and I can’t wait to connect with people in that setting.
SAME 3 QUESTIONS WE ALWAYS ASK
ATN: Artist/band that you feel is the most underrated and why?
NOEL: Ryan Beatty is definitely someone I think deserves more recognition. His album Calico has been on repeat for me all year. His songwriting is incredible, and his voice has this soothing quality that’s impossible to ignore.
ATN: Artist/band that you would like to collaborate with and why?
NOEL: I’d love to collaborate with Billie Eilish. I’m a sucker for boy-girl duets, and her voice is absolutely stunning. I think we could create something really special together.
ATN: Artist/band that you would like to tour with and why?
NOEL: Noah Kahan would be a dream tour partner. I’m a huge fan of his music, and I’ve heard he’s hilarious, so I feel like we’d get along really well. Touring with someone you admire and vibe with sounds like the best experience.
