ALBUM REVIEW: …buried where you stand by Mutes

Music Review
Shelia Taylor
May 13, 2024

Birmingham’s post-punk stalwarts, Mutes, return with their fourth studio album, …buried where you stand, a bold and unfiltered exploration of existential themes set against a backdrop of raw, unadulterated soundscapes. Set for release on May 17th, 2024, this twelve track opus marks a departure from the elaborate production of their previous albums, opting instead for a stripped-back approach that captures the essence of their live performances.

Recorded almost entirely live at Megatone Studios under the watchful eye of engineer Mark Gittins, …buried where you stand finds Mutes embracing their roots while further refining their enigmatic, genre-defying sound. From the frenetic energy of “Mere Slaughter” to the psychedelic energy of “Perfumed Corpse” and the haunting sounds of “.cycles,” the album traverses a diverse sonic soundscape that does not sacrifice the band’s  distinct artistic vision.

At the heart of …buried where you stand lies a thematic exploration of the human condition, as vocalist and lyricist James jumps into the deep end of the complexities of existence. Drawing inspiration from personal introspection rather than external socio-political commentary, James crafts a self-directed existential manifesto that looks into themes of spiritual ambivalence, substance abuse, and the relentless pursuit of meaning in a chaotic world.

“Transparency,” the album’s lead song, sets the tone for what’s to come with its angular guitar riffs and distorted vocals. It is a potent reminder of the inevitability of mortality, exploring themes of mortality and the human condition with haunting intensity.

In crafting …buried where you stand Mutes sought to capture the raw immediacy of their live performances, eschewing overdubs and separation between instruments in favour of a more honest and authentic sound. The result is an album that feels alive and visceral, drawing listeners into its hypnotic embrace with each passing track.

As one of Birmingham’s most prolific bands, Mutes have carved out a niche for themselves with their boundary-pushing approach to music. With …buried where you stand they continue to push the envelope, challenging conventions and defying expectations with their uncompromising artistic vision.

MUST LISTEN TRACKS: “Transparency”, “Televangelist”, “Spiders Again”, “.cycles”, “Mere Slaughter”, “Sightless”
