ALBUM REVIEW: Counterculture by The Tale Untold

The Tale Untold’s latest release, Counterculture, is a powerful exploration of modern chaos, where brutal metal riffs clash with pop-inspired hooks and electronic textures. The Nebraska-based quintet fearlessly dives into a variety of heavy genres, making for a full-length album that’s as intricate as it is hard-hitting.

“Show Me” sets the tone and delivers a sonic storm of crushing guitars and guttural screams, yet it strikes a balance with a massive, arena-worthy chorus that glimmers with an unexpected sense of hope. It’s a complex opener, capturing the emotional turbulence of feeling lost yet still grasping for a way forward. The following track, “Burn It Down,” amplifies the aggression with tight grooves and rebellious electronic accents that channels a visceral intensity.

Featuring guest vocals from Jordan Rush, “Dream” stands out as a moment of uplift. The interplay between optimism and reality gives this track a compelling emotional tension. The song’s infectious melody and inspirational message about the power of belief deliver a stark contrast to the darker themes.

On the more sinister side, “The Craving” pairs a catchy, pop-leaning musical backdrop with lyrics exploring dangerous allure. “Devil’s Doom” and “God Complex” take one into even murkier waters, filled with eerie vocal harmonies and uneasy instrumental layers. “God Complex,” in particular, carries a biting energy and subtle operatic flourishes that heighten the song’s theme of battling external judgement.

The penultimate track “All Time High” brings forth a reflective and almost dystopian perspective. It’s an ironic anthem that questions society’s obsession with luxury while emphasising a collective dissatisfaction. The message hits with undeniable force as frontwoman Eliss Hall’s vocals sear through the mix.

Counterculture shines in its ability to juxtapose raw heaviness with melodic catchiness. It’s a metal album that blends gut-punching riffs with captivating melodies and explores the chaos of modern existence.
