ALBUM REVIEW: Edit Undo by Happy Accidents

Happy Accidents return with their anticipated album Edit Undo, set to drop on September 27, 2024, via Alcopop! Records. The latest release not only showcases the band’s signature energy but also reflects a thoughtful examination of music’s place in our modern world.

At the heart of Edit Undo lies a provocative concept – the exploration of music’s worth in an age of digital excess. Happy Accidents challenge the fleeting nature of modern music consumption. In a time where tracks often come and go in the blink of an eye, they invite one into a hidden world through pre-orders and secret pages. Happy Accidents are not just releasing an album but creating an experience. The innovative approach seeks to foster deeper connections between the band and their fans and they’re offering exclusive content that extends beyond mere audio.

The creative process behind Edit Undo is as refreshing as the music itself. Recorded over an extended period, the band opted for a more relaxed approach and allowed their ideas to flourish naturally. Rich Mandell, guitarist and vocalist, notes,

“We’ve sort of integrated it into our normal lives which has been way more fun.”

This freedom is evident in the album’s sound which feels both spontaneous and polished. It’s a true reflection of the band’s growth since their 2016 debut, You Might Be Right.

Singles like “Infinite Possibilities” capture the struggle of navigating mental hurdles and cleverly illustrates how perceptions can box us in despite the vast opportunities that lie ahead. Rich says,

“There are infinite ways to interpret the events that happen to us, and maybe only through endless trial and error will we really figure out what’s going on up there.”

Meanwhile, “Dog Day” showcases a collaborative spirit with fellow musician Sophie. The song is rooted in self-reflection and camaraderie and captures a moment of vulnerability that is both relatable and invigorating. Drummer Phoebe Cross reflects on the experience,

“I think we were all feeling a bit low and it felt so good to channel this energy into writing a song together. I had words written down in my notebook, and the melody came to me whilst listening to Sophie and Rich playing their instruments. I think I really drew from a lot of my favourite artists for this song especially. By the end of the day we were all so energised and it turned out to be one of our faves on the record!”

In a music scene where singles often overshadow albums, Edit Undo stands as an invitation to reconsider how we engage with music. Happy Accidents challenge the norm and offer fans not just songs, but a narrative experience. The album is a celebration of artistic integrity, resilience, and community; qualities that every music fan can appreciate.
