ALBUM REVIEW: I Thought It Would be Easier by Annie Dressner

Music Review

April 5, 2024

Annie Dressner‘s latest album, I Thought It Would Be Easier is a poignant journey through the labyrinth of human emotions, offering a heartfelt and honest exploration of love, loss, and memories.

On the album Annie says,

“I Thought It Would Be Easier encompasses the theme of the record. I didn’t realize how hard life could be and would be at certain times. I hope that the record will resonate with people. Perhaps they have gone through similar things and therefore feel heard and comforted by the songs. Maybe the songs can express the listener’s emotions that they couldn’t articulate themselves. Or maybe people will just like the way that they sound! I guess I just hope people like the record… I know I do!”

From the opening track, “Black And White,” Annie sets the tone with sweeping vocals and introspective lyrics, inviting one into her world of introspection and contemplation. The album’s themes range from the complexities of grief in songs like “I Just Realized,” to the bittersweet nostalgia of “Lofted Houses,” where Annie reflects on the enduring power of friendship. Throughout the album, Annie’s voice shines with its sincerity and vulnerability, drawing one in with its raw authenticity.

One of the standout tracks on the album is “18 Years,” an exploration of disappointment and betrayal. Annie’s lyrics cut to the core as she sings of feeling let down by someone she thought mattered, but who ultimately failed to meet her expectations. It’s a song that speaks to the universal experience of disillusionment and the pain of unmet expectations, delivered with Annie’s trademark honesty and grace.

While much of the album delves into themes of sadness and regret, there are also moments of lightness and hope. “Lofted Houses,” with its infectious melodies and bright music, celebrates the enduring bonds of friendship, while the album’s closing track, “Should’ve Seen It Coming,” offers a candid reflection on the pitfalls of toxic relationships.

I Thought It Would Be Easier demonstrates Annie’s mastery of songwriting, effortlessly blending touching lyrics with captivating melodies. The album is a testament to her ability to translate life’s hardships into music that resonates with one on a deep emotional level. With its blend of heartfelt sincerity and raw honesty, I Thought It Would Be Easier is a stunning showcase of Annie’s talent as a singer-songwriter.
