ALBUM REVIEW: Kissing Death by Mothica

Mothica‘s third album, Kissing Death, is an ambitious dive into the darkest corners of the human experience. Told through an audio-visual narrative, the haunting pop-rock collection explores Mothica’s personal battles with depression, addiction, and suicidal ideation.

Through her visceral storytelling, Mothica transforms her pain into art by blending lush and raw soundscapes that are filled with soaring rock guitars, searing synths, and infectious dance floor ready beats. Tracks like “The Reaper” and “Afterlife” are steeped in dark humour and vulnerability that showcase Mothica’s talent for turning her despair into catchy and cathartic music.

Mothica shares,

“For my whole life, I’ve romanticized death. In the back of my mind, suicide seemed like a natural and easy solution. When my thoughts get dark, I remind myself that we have an infinite amount of time to ‘not exist.’ For the small sliver I’m here, it’s important to soak up every second and make the most of it. It’s scary to surrender to the unknown, but it’s powerful to not give into my toxic vices anymore’.”

The accompanying visuals push the narrative further, with Mothica casting the Grim Reaper as a twisted love interest in a surrealist rom-com.

“Throughout the visuals, I’m seen in a therapist’s office explaining this complicated relationship as if describing a scorned lover. The videos unfold a surrealist version of my life story.”

Delivered with authenticity and dark wit, Kissing Death is a daring exploration of life’s most difficult topics. Mothica‘s fearless approach to music and visuals makes her latest album an infectious dark romance with mortality.
