ALBUM REVIEW: Monument Road by Quitter

Scottish singer-songwriter, Quitter is anything but what his namesake may mean.

With his latest album Monument Road out on Sept 22 on Heavenly Creatures and Gold Mold Records, Quitter has crafted a soul-stirring experience that blends his distinctive confessional storytelling, noise rock, lo-fi aesthetics, and emotive melodies.

On the album, Quitter says,

A road is a pretty tried-and-tested allegory for life and for me, when I entered my thirties I started feeling the accumulation of memories and time more acutely, and how your life’s great conversations, nights, mornings, mistakes, flukes, discoveries, people, places are what gives you that sense of time and brings you to this point exactly.

by Audrey Bizouerne

Those great moments can be heard in such tracks like the lead single, “Penny Drop” or within the ode to indecisiveness track “Hey Useless”.

But the great moments don’t just stop at those two singles. All eleven tracks are wonderful moments caught in time. It’s Quitter’s lyrical exploration of life’s journey and how he reflects on those accumulated memories and passages of time that make Monument Road an emblem for life itself.

Quitter further adds,

I feel like we build monuments to these things along the road of life, and sort of walk up and down in their shadow. I’ve tried to represent the monuments I’ve built, here in this set of songs – some standing tall, others long half-built, many of them regularly revisited. All lovingly set in line either side of this road.

Monument Road is a collection of songs that encompass various musical textures with some tracks that embrace lo-fi sensibilities with carefully layered drum machines and percussion recorded in hallways. Others feature live band recordings captured in an old manor house in Stirling but nonetheless the common thread running through all the songs is that the sounds are made by real people in a real room instead of by a machine or program.

If Quitter’s goal was to immerse the listener in the music, making them feel as though they are right there in the same room, then check the goal as accomplished. He has easily crafted authentic and emotional music that resonates. Allowing space for anyone seeking a genuine and introspective musical experience.

With Monument Road, Quitter offers us not just an album but a heartfelt invitation to explore life’s nuances, memories, and the monuments we create along our individual journeys.
