ALBUM REVIEW: Sexy Mathematics by Sexy Mathematics

Toronto-based Sexy Mathematics first made waves in the indie synth rock scene with their 2011 debut Future Nights and they are back with their self-titled album set to be released on September 17. The album marks a significant evolution in their sound and reflects their growth as a band and their ability to adapt and overcome challenges.

From the outset, Sexy Mathematics (the album) establishes itself as a bold and introspective work. It opens with “Especially You,” a track that sets a high bar with its dynamic interplay of dissonant layers and sweeping crescendos. This introduction hints at the album’s overarching theme of duality, where light and dark coexist, and personal connection is juxtaposed with existential despair.

Throughout the album, the band’s shift from their earlier indie pop leanings to a more sophisticated, atmospheric sound is evident. The production by Stephen Krecklo and mixing by Jordon Zadorozny lend the record a polished yet emotionally raw edge. Stephen’s influence is apparent in the album’s rich and textured soundscapes that blend traditional rock foundations with modern digital synths. This fusion creates a duality in listening experience, marked by intricate layers and powerful sonic moments, there is an 80s retro goth sound as well as a modern vibe.

Tracks like “A Night to Remember” and “Boron” showcase the band’s continued exploration of personal and existential themes, while “Disappearer” and “When Isometrics Collide” look into the emotional complexity and the uncertainty of the future. The guest vocal harmonies by Ashley Jane and Gregory Macdonald add another dimension and emphasise the band’s receptiveness to outside influences.

Chris Daviduik and Matt Aggus’s long-standing musical synergy shines through, particularly in the nuanced guitar work and rhythm section that drive the album. Chris’ songwriting, combined with the atmospheric production, offers a reflective yet invigorating exploration of the human condition.

Sexy Mathematics is a personal and artistic statement. It captures the essence of navigating life’s dualities through music, blending nostalgic influences with a fresh, innovative approach.
