DEBUT EP REVIEW: Modern Artifice by Freyja Elsy

Cardiff’s classically trained musician and composer, Freyja Elsy, is set to unveil her debut EP, Modern Artifice, on November 24th. Representing the culmination of three years’ worth of singles and live performances, the EP is a journey through love, inequality, existentialism, and impassioned fury.

The self-taught electro-pop producer not only unveils her remarkable artistry but also demonstrates her ability to craft powerful music and heartfelt lyrics. and she does it with just the four tracks of Modern Artifice.

Opening song, “Sad Girls” examines the pressures faced by women in a male-dominated society while also challenging the commodification of youth.

The current single, “Over It,” weaves intricate looping beats that capture the profound existential crisis of a life stuck in repetition.

The spiritual sister to Freyja’s debut single, “Lungs,” “Limerence” delves into the apprehension of being truly understood in a new relationship.

Drawing inspiration from The Crucible, the final track, “Salem,” brims with a quiet, seething rage as it confronts men who claim to be feminists yet continue to benefit from a patriarchal system.

With its ethereal vocals, thought-provoking lyrics, and stirring music, Modern Artifice is a journey that goes beyond sound. It asks one to reflect not just on their personal journey, but to look at the world around them and how they could perhaps make it a better place for the women in their lives.
