There’s no rest for the sonically wicked. From their debut EP, I Am a Demon (May 3), Vesseles offer their first aural sacrifice to the masses with their debut “Suffocating Flesh.”
On the song, Vesseles mastermind Valira Pietrangelo says,
“This song solely deals with self hatred and feeling trapped in my body. This reflects the intensity I felt early on into learning how to cope with dysphoria.”
Valira says this of the EP
“I Am A Demon goes through the transformation of my identity. It flows from self hatred, to release, ritual and thus transformation, closing on the disconnect between soul and body. Musically there are elements of decay illustrated by a gradual increase in dissonance and unexpected change alongside black metal tropes.”
With Adam Rupp on vocals and Nick Loiacano on drum programming, “Suffocating Flesh” is brutally fierce, not just in its vocals and music, but in its lyrics. Valira’s words carry a visceral and raw honesty of not only the hate and dysphoria she felt, but I imagine it could also be a universal description for those going through their own dysphoria and hate.
