DISCOVER: gloomy june

San Francisco’s gloomy june may be an odd name for a band born in a city known for its sunny reputation, but it makes perfect sense when you understand the band’s roots. Drawing inspiration from the Bay Area’s annual “June Gloom” — a month marked by cold fog and melancholic skies — gloomy june channels the raw beauty of contradiction into their sound: a blend of emotional vulnerability, synth-driven melodies, and punk energy.

After a whirlwind 2022, which saw the queer emo-pop band performing at festivals like SXSW, Pouzza Fest, and The Fest, and playing iconic DIY venues in their hometown, gloomy june is gearing up for their debut full-length album. The album, Back from the Dead, is set for release in 2025, but before it drops, they’ve shared a taste of what’s to come with their latest single and the title track, “Back from the Dead.”

“Back from the Dead” sees the band refining their signature sound — a genre-blurring fusion of anthemic synths, gritty guitar lines, and punchy, danceable drums. It’s a song that can just as easily spark a dance party as it can a euphoric sing-along. Picture a love child of PVRIS and Paramore, with a side of Vans Warped Tour angst, and you’re close to the vibe.

This latest offering from gloomy june finds them not only embracing their musical contradictions but also standing firmly within them. From hopeful crescendos to deep, cathartic breakdowns, the track has something for both the heart and the dance floor.

With a year spent writing and recording their LP, the band, led by frontwoman Alexi Belchere, guitarist and synth wizard Devin Nelson, bassist/producer Jack Sundquist, and drummer Ash Hyatt,  is ready to bring their raw, cathartic energy to new audiences.

“Back from the Dead” is out now — listen and prepare for the full album in 2025.
