EP REVIEW: Live at Retrophonics by Caitlin Mahoney

Caitlin Mahoney’s Live at Retrophonics Studio (March 21st) is a masterful reimagining of her previous work, transforming the polished indie pop tracks of her past into stripped-down heartfelt folk renditions. Recorded live at the legendary Retrophonics Studio in St. Augustine, Florida, the EP captures the raw energy and authenticity of a live performance. The decision to rework these songs into a more organic and folk-driven style is a testament to Caitlin’s versatility and creative spirit.

The EP showcases three reworked tracks: “IDKHTTYN”, “West for a While”, and “Surface Level.” The arrangements are leaner, allowing Caitlin’s poignant lyrics and the emotional pull of the music to take center stage. The live setting amplifies the connection by offering one a sense of being in the room with her and where every note feels spontaneous and real. The intimate nature of the recording process is further elevated by the collaboration with Jacksonville artists Kale That Raps and Howdy. Kale That Raps adds his own fresh verse and harmonies on “Surface Level,” while Howdy’s pedal steel guitar on “West for a While” and “IDKHTTYN” infuses these songs with a sense of yearning, a departure from their more upbeat studio versions.

Live at Retrophonics Studio offers a fresh perspective on Caitlin Mahoney’s evolving sound. The live renditions of these familiar tracks invite one into a more vulnerable and grounded space that showcases her ability to adapt and grow as an artist. It’s a project that not only reflects her musical journey but also honors the local music scene that has inspired her along the way.
