EP REVIEW: Locked Up by Vonavibe

I’m always drawn to well-executed cover songs, and Vonavibe’s latest four-track EP, Locked Up, out on Eclipse Records August 23, does not disappoint. This release features three standout covers and a stunning instrumental that elevates the art of the cover song.

The Athens-based band brings fresh energy to classics by Tears for Fears, Linkin Park, and The Weeknd. Vonavibe offers two versions of Tears for Fears’ iconic “Mad World”. One fully realised and one as a haunting instrumental. Their rendition merges delicate piano passages and beautiful haunting melodies with powerful guitar riffs, creating a cinematic atmosphere that is both apocalyptic and uplifting. Dyon’s raspy vocals add an emotional depth that enriches the track.

The bass is the shining star of “Blinding Lights”. Vonavibe takes The Weekend’s hit and layers it with a rumbling bassline, crushing guitars from John Tass and heavy drums from George Adrian. The result is a rock anthem that retains the original’s catchiness while transforming it into a fist pumping, headbanging experience.

Linkin Park’s “Bleed It Out” is a bold choice, and Vonavibe’s interpretation does not shy away from the challenge. With a single vocalist, Dyon adeptly channels both Chester Bennington’s raw intensity and Mike Shinoda’s rapping flair. The band strips the song down to its essential elements, focusing on the song’s defiant spirit with a potent, three-piece arrangement.

The EP closes with an instrumental version of “Mad World,” which showcases Vonavibe’s musical prowess. Without vocals, the track allows the piano, strings, and overall composition to shine, highlighting the band’s keen sense of musicality and craftsmanship.

Locked Up reflects Vonavibe’s passion not just for their own music, but for the artistry of others. It’s more than a cover EP. It’s a heartfelt tribute to music lovers and the creators behind the songs that resonate with us all.
