EP REVIEW: Realm of the Exiled by Exiled Hope and Steel Forge

In an unexpected but seamless collaboration, Maryland’s Exiled Hope and UK’s Steel Forge have joined forces to release Realm of the Exiled, a six-track EP that combines the storytelling depth of dark fantasy metal with the raw and high-energy sound of melodic death and doom metal. Set for release on January 10th, 2024, the EP is a thrilling and cathartic exploration of both musical and narrative evolution.

At its core, Realm of the Exiled is a continuation of the saga of Hope, the central figure of Exiled Hope’s previous albums. Following her execution for leading a rebellion in the city at the end of Exiled Hope (2020), the protagonist embarks on a harrowing journey through the underworld. This “midquel” fills a crucial chapter in Hope’s ongoing struggle for redemption and survival and is a significant shift for Sofia Frasz, the mastermind behind Exiled Hope, as she explores new songwriting techniques and collaborates with Steel Forge’s Danny Hell and his bandmates.

One of the standout elements of Realm of the Exiled is the impressive blend of musical styles that brings together the signature sounds of both bands. Sofia, known for her ability to craft dark, symphonic, and cinematic pieces, takes a bold step into melodic death metal territory with this EP. The tracks carry a fierce energy, driven by rapid-fire riffs and blast beats, while maintaining the epic atmosphere that defines both bands. “The Calling,” the first single, captured this essence perfectly with its driving rhythms, soaring guitar work, and dynamic shifts in intensity. It’s a track that captures both the dark fantasy themes of Exiled Hope and the gritty power of Steel Forge.

The collaboration works so well because both bands manage to push each other out of their comfort zones without losing their distinct identities. For example, “Fate’s Design” features a remarkable balance between heavy, doom-laden sections and more melodic, almost anthemic choruses, creating a feeling of tension and release. It’s a dynamic that showcases Sofia’s ability to marry the abrasive and the beautiful, a skill she honed on her previous works but fully embraces here. At the same time, the influence of Steel Forge’s sound that is full of hard-hitting riffs and melodic death metal ferocity gives Realm of the Exiled an edge that feels fresh and exciting.

Creating a contrast that fuels the emotional stakes of the story, Sofia and Danny’s vocals create the narrative tension between Hope and her new confidant, The Forger. They add a layer of intrigue to the record through tracks like “Beyond the Veil” and “Approaching Resurrection”. The songs not only highlight the character’s relationship but the partnership between Sofia and Danny. The vocal contrast is further amplified by how Realm of the Exiled blends heavier moments with occasional folk-infused passages or haunting melodies that provide a brief respite before the storm of metal kicks back in. This balance between light and dark isn’t just a musical strategy but also mirrors the themes of the EP and Hope’s struggle to navigate her inner and outer turmoil as she faces unimaginable trials.

“Epilogue,” the closing track, offers a moment of quiet reflection and is a fitting end to an EP that isn’t just about chaos and conflict but also about the quiet moments that build up the larger narrative arc. Realm of the Exiled is a powerful and exciting release for both Exiled Hope and Steel Forge and highlights the strengths of both bands while also forging a new path in the dark fantasy metal genre. The EP is a testament to the creative risks that come with collaboration, proving that when two worlds collide, it can result in something truly remarkable.
