HOT TRACK: “For a New God” by Genus Ordinis Dei

To say I’m fully invested in the episodes (aka singles) of Genus Ordinis Dei’s releases for their forthcoming concept album The Beginning is an understatement. From the first single “Changing Star” to the current single “For a New God”, the band has captivated my attention and I await for each to drop as if it were a series on a streaming service.

There is tragedy in “For a New God” as it studies the darkest corners of one’s soul and it’s Nick’s vocal delivery that emphasises the heartache and heaviness of the lyrics in a beautiful way. One can feel the hurt, the pain, and the hard decisions that are being faced. There’s wonderful depth to his voice that shines throughout the song and showcases his innate talent to go above harsh and heavy vocals.

Picking up where “Genesis” left off, we find Brother carrying a dying Sister who asks him to bring her peace by ending her life. As if the decision wasn’t agonising enough, she further asks him to gain the knowledge of The Fallen by consuming her heart.

On the video Tommy Monticelli (guitarist/producer) says,

“For this epic fight scene between The Brother and the Strongest Cannibal, we decided to film at Po’s Beach and Gombito’s Beach in Italy.” Along the marshy beaches The Sister is captured by one of the two Cannibals and The Brother will have to face the strongest cannibal in a fight to the death. This is the most heartbreaking piece of the entire opera. A tribute to the bond between two siblings that, when the broken and destroyed voice of the brother is heard, makes it reverberate like thunder. It was a fantastic experience to film a bare-knuckle fight, simulating all the strength and power of a clash between men who are more like wild beasts than civilized humans. The tremendous scene with the boulder is certainly the highest moment of the episode’s climax. In ‘For A New God’ you can then see all the skill of our two makeup artists (Valentina & Beatrice) in recreating wounds, cuts and bleeding using their incredible props and SFX.”

Without further ado, watch “For a new God”
