LISTEN: “Achin’ to Be” and “Black Sheets of Rain” by Ryan Adams

Ryan Adams fans can cheer! After kicking off 2024 with not one but five releases, 1985, Heatwave, Prisoners (Live), Star Sign, Sword & Stone, the prolific artist announced that every Friday for the next twenty-four weeks, he’ll be doing a cover series which features two tracks that were recorded at his shows over the last two years.

Twenty-four weeks y’all. That’s forty-eight songs! That’s enough for four twelve track albums. Does the man ever sleep?

The first two tracks from the cover series feature “Achin’ to Be” by The Replacements and “Black Sheets of Rain” by Bob Mould. Both were recorded in Minneapolis, MN in 2022.

In “Achin’ to Be” it is just Ryan, a guitar, and a harmonica. Man, can that dude make a harmonica emotional. One can hear the ache, no pun intended, of the music and notes. While “Black Sheets of Rain” is sans harmonica, it is nonetheless just as emotional as its predecessor.

In an email to his PAX-AM subscribers, Ryan says,

“For me starting at what for most was the end of The Replacements catalog was ideal. This was a band who by all accounts had a mission statement. To lose.”

He further added,

“As long as you’re aching to be something, you’re still becoming a picture, you’re a foggy Polaroid of something better. There’s always time, even if it’s in the bittersweet hindsight of a song like that.”
