Indie folk meets post-punk in a wandering cinematic journey with the latest Thunderclap! single. “Forced to Walking” is a hypnotic blend of indie folk and post-punk that captures a moment of solitude and self-reflection with striking clarity.
Built on a foundation of raw storytelling, the track transports one to a winter evening in Niagara Falls, where the artist first found inspiration.
The song came about one winter years ago when I was walking around in the back parking lot of a mall in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I was feeling lonely & thinking about my life. The cloudy melancholy sunset was coloured in very peculiar hues of browns, bronzes, and greys (as mentioned in the song).
With the scene set, the song’s wandering spirit is layered in both its lyrics and music. Recorded in his personal workshop on Queen Street, the song marks the artist’s first time working with a standup bass player, violinist, and French horn player. These elements add an unexpected richness to the song’s atmosphere. While Thunderclap! expressed the song came together quickly the result feels anything but rushed.
By blending folk and post-punk, “Forced to Walking” is both reflective and dynamic. It’s a journey that mirrors its creation…walking, thinking, and finding meaning in the spaces in between.
