Gut Health had me hooked from the moment I heard the bass line with their latest track, “Separate States.” The Naarm/Melbourne-based dance-punk sextet has a unique ability to weave chaos and melody into a seamless and compelling sound and “Separate States” is no exception.
With a focus on the “healing qualities of consensual rage”, the band has a brilliant knack for letting loose the fury within in their infectious and catchy music. Consisting of Athina Uh oh on vocals, Eloise Murphy-Hill and Dom Willmott on guitars, Angus Fletcher on percussion and synth, Myka Wallace on drums, and Adam McKay on bass, the band has been making waves in the underground music scene since 2022.
The band describes “Separate States” as “us at our most experimental thus far” and it perfectly captures their attitude and spirit. With its beautiful bass line, jangly synths, sharp guitars and drums, the song is honest in its urgency to address the environmental damage caused by years of neglect.
With a pointed and angry poke at the generations before them, Gut Health turned raising awareness for the environment into something truly unique and thought-provoking. It just so happens to also be a danceable punk sound that is fun, refreshing, and exciting.
