From their forthcoming eighth studio album, The Amity Affliction, has given fans a lyrically powerful and visually stunning new song and video with “Show Me Your God”.
Joel Birch (vocals) said this of the song,
‘Show Me Your God’ is the first song of our first self-produced record. The song is the first in a series of explorations and internal meditations on how our past shapes us and interacts with our various mental struggles in the present, drawing from both personal experience and also the trauma of close friends who have passed away or who have dealt with close loved ones passing away.
For approximately ten seconds, the beautiful opening piano and whisper of the words show me your god betrays the brutality of “Show Me Your God”.
Once Birch screams, the beauty gives way to the brutal truth of the song.
There is no god that will save us, a friend, or a loved one from death.
The lyrics and music for “Show Me Your God” are visceral, gut wrenching, and filled with anger and pain.
The video was directed by Tyson Lloyd which finds the band in a snow covered forest intertwining imagery of religion, in my opinion, failing.
Like most The Amity Affliction songs and some videos, they are meant to confront emotions and feelings that run within some of our souls and I think that’s what I love most about “Show Me Your God”.
It asks one to confront their belief in whether their god would save them.
