EP REVIEW: On and On by Penny Rich

The Cardiff-based trio, Penny Rich are known for their exhilarating noise punk sound  and their back with a new EP that will surely make waves. On And On set to be released on September 27 is a blistering addition to the band’s discography and showcases their unapologetic energy and unique approach to rock.

Since their debut in 2018, Penny Rich has carved a niche with their explosive live shows and a sound that blends raw punk energy with noise rock’s abrasive edges. Their previous releases have earned them a devoted following, and On And On is set to push their distinctive style further into the limelight.

On And On stands out not just for its relentless intensity but for how it builds upon the band’s established sound while venturing into new territory. Recorded with Andrew Sanders at Kings Road Studio and mastered by Kurtis Bagley of Luna Crown Audio, the production on On And On is a masterful blend of clarity and chaos. The record captures the frenetic energy of their live performances that are a crucial element of Penny Rich’s appeal.

One of the defining features of On And On is its thematic depth. The EP looks at personal and societal struggles with an unfiltered and raw approach. The opening track, “Fundamentals,” addresses the disillusionment with mainstream health solutions and reflects a broader frustration with systemic inefficiencies and neglect. It’s a powerful commentary that will resonate with those who feel marginalised or misunderstood by conventional approaches.

The title track provides a scathing critique of the UK’s political landscape and highlights how echo chambers and voter apathy can create a cycle of fear and division. “On And On” is not just a political statement but a vivid portrayal of the frustration many feel in today’s polarised climate.

“Violent Glitch” tackles the impact of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and perfectionism on relationships. The track is a raw exploration of how these conditions can lead to destructive behaviours and offers a glimpse into the often-hidden struggles of those affected. This is followed by “Broken Mirror,” which confronts the emotional turmoil of body dysmorphia with a poignancy that is both painful and compelling.

On And On pushes the envelope of what noise punk can be. Each track is a high-octane mix of dissonant riffs and relentless rhythms that keep one on edge. Penny Rich’s ability to blend abrasive soundscapes with moments of unexpected nuance is what sets the EP apart as the band captures the chaotic spirit of noise rock while adding layers of lyrical and emotional complexity. With its fearless exploration of personal and societal issues On And On is proof of Penny Rich’s growth and willingness to experiment within their genre and their sound. On And On is not just a collection of tracks but a powerful statement from one of Cardiff’s most electrifying bands.
