EP REVIEW: The Square by Seven Kingdoms

Seven Kingdoms has emerged as one of North America’s most thrilling power metal outfits, and their EP, The Square, solidifies that reputation with vibrant energy and precision. The release acts as a preview of the band’s ambitions and showcases their unwavering musicianship and a few surprises for both seasoned fans and newcomers.

The EP opens with the commanding title track, a rapid-fire burst of galloping riffs and soaring melodies that reminds one why power metal remains electrifying when done right. Blistering guitar work paired with Sabrina Cruz’s commanding vocal performance creates an invigorating start, pulling one deep into the band’s electrifying soundscape. “Through These Waves” follows and offers more of a classic metal feel. It draws from traditional influences while being unmistakably stamped with Seven Kingdoms’ signature energy.

The group shifts gears with “Wilted Pieces,” a power ballad that adds an emotional pull, blending melodic finesse with lyrics that captivate without veering into sentimentality. This track is a testament to the band’s dynamic range and skill in songwriting, contrasting sharply with the EP’s fast-paced moments. “The Serpent and The Lotus” is a thrilling anthem that packs in memorable hooks and a relentless drive that begs for live performance. The EP concludes with an unexpected yet inventive cover of Mister Mister‘s “Kyrie,” reinterpreted in a heavy, yet melodic fashion that fits seamlessly with the band’s sonic ethos.

Camden Cruz and Kevin Byrd’s dual guitar leads are as synchronised and complex as ever, weaving intricate melodies while Keith Byrd’s drumming keeps everything tight and punchy. This EP captures the essence of Seven Kingdoms, a group that excels in powerful choruses, technical instrumentation, and songs that command an audience’s attention.

The Square itself feels like a warm-up for what’s to come, an appetiser before the main course of their next full album. It sets a high standard and reaffirms Seven Kingdoms‘ position as a force in the global power metal scene.
