ALBUM REVIEW: Chaotic Wisdom by Black Pestilence

From the frozen prairies of Canada comes Black Pestilence’s latest album Chaotic Wisdom.

The album title gives a peek into what one will hear upon hitting play on the album.

Chaos.

Wisdom.

But it’s more of a musically controlled chaos.

The bass riffs with each track rumble, the drums are heavy and soul crushing, the guitars are fast and furious, and the vocals howl and scream with wisdom.

With Chaotic Wisdom, Black Pestilence includes LaVeyan Satanism, current events, social issues, and the glorification of the epicurean lifestyle.

On the song “The Devil’s Connection,” vocalist and bassist, Valex says,

‘The Devil’s Connection’ addresses the advantages of having an open mind. As esoteric as some scenarios might be, it will allow one to adapt to any situation.

Of the seven tracks, it also happens to be one of the stand out tracks. The guitars and vocals make me think of early Metallica and Megadeth while the bass makes me think of Anthrax. There’s a wonderful harmony between Valex’s vocals and the music within the track. The song is both heavy and raging, yet I find it oddly calming.

While speed or thrash metal to the core, there’s a bit of punk about Black Pestilence. The band dances the fine line between thrash and punk with a destructive ease. That thrash punk blend can be heard in “Infernal Might” featuring Mark Russell and closing track “Animus”.

And before one knows it, Chaotic Wisdom is over. It clocks in at a mere twenty-four minutes. Get distracted and you might not hear the entire album and that would be quite a shame. As fast as it is, Chaotic Wisdom is quick, melodic, and a great listen.
