ALBUM REVIEW: life in cycle by fhae

Music Review
Shelia Taylor
January 11, 2026

By moving beyond simple thematic suggestion, fhae employs a concept as the very blueprint for the music. On their fifth album, life in cycle, traces the existence of a butterfly from its genesis to its final moments. By using this transformation as a specific framework to observe matters of existence, decision, and acceptance, it is a record guided by the inevitability where each movement is destined if not predicted.

The first portion of the album establishes a quiet control. It mirrors the inert period just before consciousness starts to awaken. Initial pieces unfold slowly and are anchored by subtle tonal changes and vibrational currents that convey a space of boundary and protection rather than absolute liberty. The music holds back by allowing time for internal formation.

As the collection progresses, a subtle stir of friction appears. The measured shifts in texture indicate the impulse toward change. The period of enclosure becomes the record’s primary emotional space and is characterised by solitude and a muted pressure. Layers coalesce internally by building a sense of suspension where time seems drawn out and uncertain. fhae shows control by utilising rhythmic persistence and patience to communicate disquiet without relying on outright intensity.

The moment of emergence from the cocoon introduces vitality and clarity. The music begins to expand by carrying a delicate feeling of wonder that is tempered by awareness. There is a careful sort of beauty, which acknowledges the fleeting nature of both flight and life itself. When instances of mutual engagement occur, they are brief and impulsive and are tied to pure instinct as much as genuine warmth. This creation is presented less as a victory and more as an ongoing part of being.

The closing segment confronts the waning of life and finality without panic. Life force may recede but awareness remains. The concluding arrangements greet death as a natural conclusion rather than a defeat. This acceptance is facilitated by a steady and surrounding tone that eases all resistance into eventual release.

life in cycle honors its central idea by seeing it through completely, and fhae converts the act of metamorphosis into musical shape and form by crafting a record that perfectly reflects the cycle it depicts. It is not interested in answers. It is only there to witness the process from beginning to end, and perhaps it may find meaning in having moved through it at all.
