DEBUT ALBUM REVIEW: The Dionysus Effect by The Dionysus Effect

If rock-n-roll equals sex and drugs, then The Dionysus Effect self titled debut album is the definition of sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll.

Formed by Christoph Paul (lead vocals, bass), Sean Quinn Hanley (guitar, backup vocals), and Brett Petersen (drums), The Dionysus Effect blend all genres of rock, indie, and pop into thrilling hybrid of fast, furious, and high octane rock-n-roll that has zero fear on tackling experiences of love, sex, addiction, passion, desire, and depression.

That fearlessness lyrically shines in the song about a cuckold, “Darryl” and in the song “Heroin” which tells of Christoph’s experience in a teenage rehab clinic where he experienced firsthand the perils of heroin addicts.

He confesses this about “Heroin”,

The way they talked about doing heroin was like hearing someone talking about their first love. It was as depressing as it was poetic. These memories of all the addicts I met came back to me when I wrote the bass line of the song, and I had a story to share. This is one of the few times when the song wrote itself.

The bass line for “Heroin” is ridiculously catchy as are the lyrics and it’s the combination of infectious lyrics and music that is what solidifies The Dionysus Effect as a band that can create music that leaves a lasting impact while pushing boundaries.

Punk as hell, “Girl Like a Bomb” feels as if it is the song love child of Misfits and Sex Pistols with a little bit of wailing surfer guitar thrown in. It’s infectious, fun, and chock full of sass and fighting spirit.

“Tethered” feels as if it was ripped from an Alice in Chains demo. Christoph’s vocals dance with inspiration from Layne Staley and the bass and guitar provide dirty and deep grooves that haunt as much as they ninja kick one in the face.

Eschewing the over polished, over produced, and heartless songs that rock music can be, The Dionysus Effect revel in honesty, grit, and danger. They dance lyrically on the edge of a switchblade while throwing musical punches that land with solid explosive notes.

With their debut album, The Dionysus Effect may seize the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll vibe, but they are more than that. The Dionysus Effect, band and album, are a force to be reckoned with and their debut shows they are true masters of their craft.
