DEBUT EP REVIEW: Black Marrow by Slaughtersun

Slaughtersun’s debut EP, Black Marrow, is a ferocious showcase of talent and vision and establishes the band as a rising force in death metal. Set for release on January 10, 2025, the EP consolidates their first four singles into a relentless journey through darkness and intensity, with reimagined production that highlights their brutal yet innovative approach. Produced, engineered, and mixed by the band’s very own Ben Karas, Black Marrow is as polished as it is punishing. His meticulous attention to detail ensures a balance of clarity and intensity.

From the opening moments of “Unearthly Propaganda,” a chilling introduction that sets the tone, to the final notes of the live recording of “Relentless Thelemic,” Black Marrow is a masterclass in death metal craftsmanship. Each track pulses with unrelenting aggression, powered by tight instrumentation and meticulously layered production.

“Fall of the Firmament”, their critically acclaimed debut single, balances crushing riffs with intricate melodies. It shows the band’s ability to blend the brutal and the complex. Driving forward with blistering speed and precision, “Relentless Thelemic” follows. It allows Jason Quinones’ commanding drumming and Cody McCorry’s thunderous bass lines to brutally shine in all their glory.

Offering layers of dynamic shifts and a vocal performance by Justin Hillman that is both haunting and visceral, “Ready Cell Awaits” amplifies the sheer ferocity of Slaughtersun. The title track, “Black Marrow” is a lesson in speed, fury, and savagery. Perhaps my favourite from Slaughtersun, the track is ruthless and absolutely face melting. Cutting through the heavy instrumental layers, Hillman’s vocals are both emotional and visceral. He’s able to deliver a one two punch to the gut that brings one to their knees.

Black Marrow closes with “Relentless Thelemic (Frightbox Live Session)”. Recorded at the now-closed Frightbox Recording studio, this version captures raw energy of Slaughtersun. It serves as a tribute to the studio’s legacy and a testament to the band’s unyielding intensity in live performance.

With crushing riffs, relentless energy, and haunting vocals, Black Marrow is a declaration. From their first live performance at Brooklyn’s Lucky 13 to this meticulously crafted release, Slaughtersun is a band on the rise. It’s a ferocious debut EP that cements their place in modern death metal.
