DEBUT EP REVIEW: Unlikely Hero by Mezmik

Hailing from Brisbane, Mezmik makes a powerful statement with their debut EP, Unlikely Hero (out July 15).The five piece of Jolene Turnbull on vocals, Christopher Fowler on guitar and vocals, Andrew Mackenzie on guitar, Luke Wilson on bass, and David McGuinness on drums formed in 2019 and quickly distinguished themselves with blend of melodic metal and symphonic elements.

The instrumental piece, “New Dawn”, sets the stage for Unlikely Hero and it serves as a perfect prelude to the title track, where Jolene’s clean vocals and Christopher’s harsh growls create a striking contrast, enhanced by soaring guitar solos and chugging rhythms. The symphonic touches add a layer of depth, making the song a standout on the EP.

“Flames and Fury”, “Broken Love” and “Heart Once Town” showcases Jolene’s vocal prowess as she delivers performances that are both fierce and emotive. Each track’s relentless energy and powerful riffs blend heartfelt lyrics with heavy instrumentation to create tracks that are as emotionally charged as they are musically complex.

“Hollow” and “Killer” returns to the dual vocal approach, with Jolene and Christopher trading lines amidst a backdrop of symphonic grandeur and crushing metal riffs. The songs are a testament to Mezmik’s ability to balance beauty and brutality, crafting a sound that is uniquely their own.

Each song has its own unique flavour while maintaining the overall cohesiveness of the project. Whether they are reflective with lyrics or aggressive, high-energy performances, the songs are a blend of raw energy and intricate orchestration.

Unlikely Hero is a symphonic metal marvel from Mezmik. The band’s ability to blend symphonic elements with metal’s raw power results in a listening experience that is invigorating and moving.
