EP REVIEW: Magick Helmet by Megaton Leviathan

Utilising fuzz upon fuzz upon fuzz and thundering bass, Megaton Leviathan’s EP, Magick Helmet is a moody trip through atmospheric layers of reverberation, dissonance, and well, magick.

The man behind Magick Helmet and Megaton Leviathan is Oregon’s Reuscher who recorded the EP in his own Psychedelic Inner Fortress studios.

While only for songs, the EP clocks in at just one hour with the shortest song being “The Final Form of Nothing is Final (A Slight Return)” clocking in at just over five minute and the longest being “Helios Creeds Magick Helmet” at twenty-seven minutes and thirty-two seconds. Each track has its own deep bass melodies, banshee guitar wails, and spiralling percussions and each its own relentless energy.

What I rather enjoy is the smooth transition from track to track. The cohesion of the tracks allow for an enticing undisrupted journey from start to finish. For me, the stand out track is its longest track. “Helios Creeds Magick Helmet” had me hooked on the quiet subdued bass. While the EP should be listened to in the order presented by Megaton Leviathan, the closing track does evolve into its own journey. With its bass and haunting rhythms the song captures the magic of Megaton Leviathan’s vibe. With its fuzz driven allure Magick Helmet is an odyssey through sound and not only a journey through the vast and varied landscape of doomgaze but a sonic trip through time and space.
