In their upcoming EP Slaughterhouse Five (May 9), ChumHuffer continues their tradition of unrelenting hardcore punk, while shifting their focus towards the chaos and conflict that defines today’s world. The five tracks carry the intense energy and critique the band is known for, diving into the grim reality of ongoing global and personal struggles, and reflecting a sense of deep unease that is unmistakably of our time.
The title of the EP is a direct nod to Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five, and the influence of the work’s exploration of war and existential confusion is felt throughout the record. As vocalist and guitarist Joe Dorane says,
When you step back and look at the world, it’s impossible not to feel buried by the endless barrage of conflict.
This feeling permeates throughout the EP, as ChumHuffer channels the frustrations of being “stuck in time,” a theme that singer Shawn Refuse describes as reflecting both personal and global turmoil.
The opening track, “Slaughterhouse,” offers a gritty, no-holds-barred entry into the album. It’s raw, explosive, and unfiltered, instantly setting the tone for what’s to come. While tracks like “Miami” and “Ways” blend sharp instrumentation with biting critiques, each presenting its own unique exploration of modern unrest.
The band’s fast-paced, gritty style is in full force on “Trawler,” a track that exemplifies their ability to maintain the intensity while making their message clear. Closing track, “Burning,” is a blistering conclusion that lingers just long enough to drive home the hopelessness that ChumHuffer so powerfully conveys.
Through Slaughterhouse Five, ChumHuffer’s message is unambiguous: the world is in crisis, and it’s time to confront that reality head-on. The band balances this sense of urgency with their signature ferocity by staying true to their hardcore punk ethos while addressing complex and weighty themes.
With Slaughterhouse Five, ChumHuffer delivers a critique not just of the external world, but of the internal turmoil we all experience when faced with a never-ending cycle of conflict. It’s a relentless punk assault reflecting global chaos and internal struggle.
